You don't need to download a separate QR scanner app anymore. Nearly every modern smartphone can scan a QR code directly from its built-in camera app. Here's exactly how to do it on iPhone and Android, plus a few fixes if it isn't working for you.
Scanning a QR Code on iPhone
Every iPhone running iOS 11 or later has QR scanning built directly into the Camera app. No separate download is required.
- Open the standard Camera app from your Home Screen or Control Center
- Point the camera at the QR code so it's fully visible in the frame
- A yellow notification banner will appear near the top of the screen with a link or preview
- Tap the banner to open the link, add a contact, join a Wi-Fi network, or whatever the code contains
If the banner doesn't appear, check Settings → Camera and make sure "Scan QR Codes" is toggled on — it's enabled by default, but can occasionally be switched off.
Scanning a QR Code on Android
Most Android phones (Samsung, Pixel, and other major brands running Android 9 or later) also support QR scanning natively, though the exact steps vary slightly by manufacturer:
- Open your phone's default Camera app
- Point it at the QR code — most phones show a small popup or on-screen prompt automatically
- Tap the prompt to open the link or action
If your camera app doesn't scan automatically, Google Lens is built into most Android phones and can scan QR codes reliably — look for the Lens icon inside the Camera or Google app, or swipe from the search bar on your home screen.
Scanning From a Screenshot or Saved Image
If the QR code is in a photo or screenshot rather than in front of you physically, you can still scan it without an app:
- iPhone — Open the image in Photos, tap the Live Text icon (or long-press the code area), and iOS will detect and offer to open it
- Android — Open the image and use Google Lens's "Search image" feature, which detects QR codes within photos
- Desktop/laptop — Upload the image to an online QR code reader tool that decodes it directly in your browser
Why You Don't Need a Dedicated App
Years ago, before smartphone cameras had built-in decoding, third-party QR scanner apps were necessary. Camera manufacturers have since built the decoding logic directly into the operating system, which is faster, more secure (no third-party app has access to your camera unnecessarily), and doesn't require storage space or permissions beyond what your camera already has.
Troubleshooting: When Scanning Doesn't Work
- Poor lighting — Make sure the code is well-lit and not casting a shadow across it
- Too close or too far — Hold your phone about 6-12 inches from the code; too close often fails to focus
- Damaged or blurry code — QR codes have error correction built in, but heavy damage or extreme blur can still make them unreadable
- Screen glare — If scanning a code on another screen, tilt slightly to avoid reflections
- Setting disabled — Double check your camera app's QR scanning setting hasn't been turned off
